Summertime is here and with summer comes lots of road trips. However, this year, the price of gas has gone up considerably since the start of spring. With gas prices so high, it might seem impossible to take that road trip you’ve been planning without spending a fortune, but there are ways you can beat the system, make your road trip, and save money at the pump at the same time. Whether you’re using your own car, or trying to pick out a rental, here are several tips to help you get the most out of your fill-ups this summer road trip season.

Cruise Control

When driving on straight roads where there is little to no traffic, using the cruise control can be a huge gas saver. Since cruise control helps maintain a steady and constant speed, it helps to use less gas. When we continuously decelerate and accelerate to keep at a certain speed limit, we are burning up more gas in the car. If you want to drive on long stretches without guzzling that gasoline, try using your cruise control.

Tires are Key

Your tires can make or break your gas mileage. If your tires are not doing their job of gripping the road like they are intended, they can get seriously guzzle that hard-earned gasoline. You should always make sure your tires are aligned and inflated adequately before going on a long trip to ensure that you are not wasting gas as you drive and so you can avoid a tire blowout.

Try Overdrive

In many newer cars, there is an overdrive button that does something pretty cool to your vehicle. Once you are at a high enough speed, hit that button. The overdrive lets your car run at lower RPMs which not only does less work and use less gas, but it also helps limit the wear on your engine as you drive. This could even help your car last longer.

Add Some Cool Features

There are several things you can add to your car that can help with the aerodynamics. Various additions, like wind deflectors, can improve the aerodynamics of your vehicle, and thus make it run smoother across the road. Not only does this eliminate drag, but it also helps reduce the work your car does to accelerate. In turn, that helps save you money on gas.

Conclusion

So, hopefully these tips can help you save the most money when taking that beautiful European road trip. Be sure to check out some other travel tips to see what else you can do in Europe this summer!
