If you’re traveling to an unfamiliar destination, understanding where you want to go and how to get there safely is imperative. Research is the key to planning a successful adventure, and if you’re traveling by car, adjusting to the differences prior to hitting the road increases the safety of your journey. Here are a few fantastic tips to get you ready for travel.

Research Ahead of Time

When planning a trip to a new location, do some research for the best routes and places to go. Researching the cities and countries you want to visit prior to your departure helps bring your travel plan together. Come up with an itinerary and list of potential places you might want to stay. Determining what kind of accommodations you would prefer, hotel or hostel, narrows down your options and helps you stay within your budget. Watching travel shows that feature your desired destinations provides you with an excellent selection of must-see areas and helps you understand the customs and flow of the city you’re headed to, so you can move about like a local.

Adjust to the Rental Car

If you’re traveling to the UK, the major difference for driving is the positioning of the steering wheel and gear shift. Start by familiarizing yourself with your new seating position and get comfortable with where the gear shift is located. The pedal configuration will be the same as in the U.S. but will still require some getting used to. Brush up on the rules of the road and consciously remind yourself to drive on the proper side of the road. Giving yourself plenty of time to adjust before setting off ensures a smooth transition from left to right-side car driver.

Prepare for the Unexpected

Pick up some travel insurance that covers your rental car, luggage, and medical expenses in the event of an accident. Determine how much and what kind of coverage you’ll need. Additional travel insurance plan options have extra areas of coverage that include last minute cancellations with nonrefundable fees, medical emergencies requiring transportation to a local hospital or return flight home, and assistance finding an attorney abroad.

A good understanding of where you’re going and what you’ll do when you get there wonderfully covers all of your bases. Preparation prior to going on your adventure reduces risk, giving you peace of mind so you can get the most enjoyment out of your trip.
