Getting Around in Italy: A Guide to Transportation

One of the most challenging aspects of visiting any foreign country is learning how to navigate its transportation system. However, the country of Italy is a dream for travelers looking to experience a new land and people without the hassle of having to deal with transportation headaches. Here is a quick guide to help you get around this fascinating country with ease and confidence.

Public Transportation

Like many European nations, Italy relies heavily on public transportation for its residents and visitors. Most major destinations in Italy provide extensive public transportation. Rome, Milan, Catania, Naples and Torino all boast a metro system. Smaller cities such as Florence offer bus transportation. Be aware that bus transportation is usually more limited on Sundays and holidays, so be sure to plan accordingly. While Venice does not have a metro system, it is able to move people around on its network of small passenger ferries known as vaporetti.

Mopeds and Motorbikes

You can’t go to Italy without noticing the prevalence of mopeds and motorbikes. In Italy, these are more than just recreational vehicles. They are actually primary modes of transportation for many people. While visiting the country, you can rent these popular vehicles to try them out for yourself. Mopeds tend to be slower than motorcycles and therefore have different limitations on where you can and can’t drive them. Be sure to acquaint yourself with all of the rules before taking to the streets with these motorized bikes.

Trains

The best way to get around the country is by train. Europe is known for its massive train system, and Italy is no exception. The two major train options are the Frecciarossa trains operated by Trenitalia and the high-speed trains operated by Italo. These rapid trains connect the cities of Milan, Florence, Turin, Rome, Naples, Bologna and Salerno. From any of these cities, you can catch more regional trains to reach additional destinations all over the country. Train travel is an easy, convenient and affordable way to see much of Italy without having to worry about taking to the roads yourself. There are passes available for those who wish to save more money while traveling this way.

Once you figure out the various options available to you while traveling through Italy, you will quickly feel at ease getting around this country. Taking advantage of the vast public transport offerings and being open to trying out something new such as a moped will only enhance your overall travel experience.
